Regarding Sadanand Dhume's India's Covid Curve Could Raise the World's (June 24, 2021), it is unfortunate that your esteemed outlet allows unsubstantiated claims published as opinions. For example, the author claims that "the duration of protection provided by previous exposure to the virus remains uncertain." However, there are several studies, some of them mentioned in WSJ op-ed piece by Marty Makary, suggest otherwise. There are also no studies to suggest the higher virulence of the Delta variant.
Vaccination efforts in the poor countries were set back by the greed of the richer countries who are sitting on a stockpile of unused vaccines and raw materials. Canada tried to take vaccines from the fund that helps developing countries. Even the Biden administration's patent waiver announcement came a little too late and its real effect is not expected to be realized any time soon.
India has administered more than 300 million doses of vaccine so far and is second only to the US (about 321 million doses), not counting China. No other country has administered even 3rd of the number of doses administered by India. Questions of safety against the vaccines are being raised even in the US, but the author picks on the Indian vaccine only to raise the question of "scientific rigor."
